Performing live sessions

This is a recording from a live session I did in Manchester last month for Red Bull Music Academy. It’s been causing a bit of confusion for people.

I wanted to prove that you can switch from Techno into Jungle live on the fly… some people love it, some people hate it when I mix up these two genres…

I know Jungle is a really “old” form of electronic dance music and there are some people who just discovered Techno and maybe there are certain people who just discovered there was a form of music called “Jungle Techno”… maybe even when the drugs wear off they’ll figure out the entire story and not just the latest trend. I thought it would help if I could give a bit of background.

I started making Jungle in 1991 – does anyone remember how cheesy Techno got in 1991? This is WHY we created Jungle. Techno and House basically sold out… The only reason I came back to doing Techno was because there were friends of mine pleading for me to do it…. people who enjoyed the stuff I was doing in the late 80′s. So if anyone has any kind of beef with anything to do with Jungle let me remind you about your 90′s times with your dummy in your mouth and your Vicks vapour rub and your white gloves.

It’s funny I can’t recall seeing these styles in Detroit in 1988/89 or seeing these vibes in New York or Chicago either. I’m sorry but this was the time that influenced Voodoo Ray / Emotions Electric / Blow Your House Down / Pacific State…

  1. Respect to you mr gerald, people who critise about your styl are genre snobs and not very open minded to music! And probally under the age of 25 ;)

  2. Hmm… I have always been a big fan of both techno & jungle (and “jungle techno” for that matter) They share the stripped down “drum and bass” + an appreciation for space between the beats not to mention a more direct and obvious dub & reggae influnce…
